It is the longest freshwater lake in the world (410 miles [660 km]) and the second deepest (4,710 feet [1,436 meters]). Comparatively narrow and varying in width from 10 to 45 miles (16 to 72 km), it covers about 12,700 square miles (32,900 square km).

Understanding the Context
Lake Baikal in central Asia is the deepest continental body of water on Earth, with a maximum depth of 5,315 feet (1,620 meters), and it contains about one fifth of the fresh water on the Earth’s surface (see Baikal). The next largest lakes are Lake Tanganyika in Africa and Lake Superior in North America.
Lake Balaton, largest lake of central Europe, located in central Hungary about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Budapest. It has an area of 231 square miles (598 square km) and extends for 48 miles (77 km) along the southern foothills of the Bakony Mountains of Hungary. At it widest point, Lake Balaton measures about 9 miles (14 km) across.
